Farris was founding president of both the Home School Legal Defense Association (1983) and Patrick Henry College (2000) and continues to serve as chairman of the board of HSLDA and chancellor emeritus of PHC.

He graduated from Western Washington State College magna cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in political science, followed by a Juris Doctor from Gonzaga University (with honors). He also earned an LL.M. in public international law (with honors) from the University of London.

Farris has specialized in constitutional appellate litigation. In that capacity, he has argued before the appellate courts of 13 states, eight federal circuit courts of appeal, and the U.S. Supreme Court, where in 2018 he successfully argued NIFLA v. Becerra, resulting in a free speech victory for California’s pro-life pregnancy centers.

Farris has testified many times before both the House and Senate. He was an executive committee member of the Coalition for the Free Exercise of Religion that successfully lobbied Congress for the passage of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993. He also has substantial experience in international religious freedom advocacy.

Farris is the author of over 15 books, as well as law review and other scholarly and popular articles. He and his wife, Vickie, have 10 children and 22 grandchildren.

Prior to joining First Liberty Institute, Watts served in various campaign and official staff positions for U.S. Congressman Jeb Hensarling, U.S. Senator John Cornyn, and Texas Governor Rick Perry. His executive leadership roles in non-profit organizations specializing in political affairs and community outreach contributed to the election of numerous members of the U.S. Congress, multiple state legislators, and governors. James Brown, three-time Emmy Award-winner, serves as host for the CBS Television Network’s NFL pre-game show, THE NFL TODAY. He again will anchor THE NFL TODAY along with analysts Boomer Esiason, Bill Cowher, Phil Simms and Nate Burleson. Brown has hosted the Network’s Super Bowl pre-game show for its coverage of Super Bowl 50 (2016), Super Bowl XLVII (2013), Super Bowl XLIV (2010) and Super Bowl XLI (2007). He also anchored the pre-game and half-time show for CBS and NFL Network’s coverage of Thursday Night Football along with Cowher and Deion Sanders (2014-17). In 2012 he was named Special Correspondent for CBS News contributing to various News programs including 60 MINUTES, CBS Sunday Morning, 48 Hours, CBS THIS MORNING and CBS EVENING NEWS. In September 2017, “The James Brown Show,” America’s premier, nationally-syndicated sports and entertainment half-hour series, launched.

Brown’s first book, Role of a Lifetime: Reflections on Faith, Family and Significant Living, was published in September 2009. In his memoir Brown relayed how he found the role he was meant to play, highlighting both the good and bad decisions he made along the way, teaching readers how to discover life’s purpose for themselves.</p><p>In 1974, James asked the Lord into his heart after realizing that success by the world’s standards was a pretty empty feeling. That began a 10 to 12 year search before landing in a good Word-based church, Rhema Christian Center Church, where he has been since 1986. James has been a Minister since 2002 and on April 19, 2009, he became an Ordained Minister. His wife, Evangelist Dorothy Brown is on the ministerial staff at Rhema as well. She teaches the Tabernacle of Moses at Rhema’s Givens Bible College.</p><p>He has been blessed to minister at numerous churches and Men’s Conferences around the country. James has also been blessed to appear on several Christian network television shows, such as Praise the Lord (PTL), Hour of Power and the 700 Club. He also has an Honorary Degree from Carver Bible College.</p><p>In September 2009, James’ first co-authored book entitled, Role of a Lifetime: Reflections on Faith, Family and Significant Living, was released.
